READING is the utmost pleasure – that’s true enough.Anyone up for debate on THIS topic, here is my reply to you –
But sometimes it also serves as a reminder of the acute lack ( of what, exactly? ) in our lives. When I see all those characters so intimately involved in each other’s thoughts and feelings – the inner workings of their minds – I can’t help but feel a sharp sting. It reminds me of all the things that I don’t have in my life yet – all those things that I haven’t experienced. And what’s more – it makes me wonder IF I’ll EVER have it all? And these realizations pave way to skepticism. So, in a way reading is dangerous. It is AS TREACHEROUS AS IT IS PLEASURABLE.
And that’s how it was while I went on and on – AND ON AND ON – turning pages of ‘Women in Love’ – NEVER STOPPING – my mind on prozac but my nerves in a flutter.
DO YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO BE HUMAN? DO YOU WANT TO FEEL VALIDATED IN ALL THOSE ANXIETIES AND RIDICULOUS DILEMMAS YOU FACE ON A DAILY BASIS? WELL, I DO. And so, this was a delightful, if at times nerve wrecking, experience for me.
Lawrence seems to be speaking my mind here. Women in Love is not a series of events that you follow to wait eagerly on the conclusion. It is more of a journey. If you expect to find a gripping tale – EXCITING EVENTS WITH A LIFE OF THEIR OWN – then I’d advice against reading it. Because of this simple reason – the recurrent and underlying element in this book is NATURE. And, mind you, nature is a phenomenon; it’s a process. BUT,it’s also JUST THERE. Omniscience and omnipotent. You barely notice it sometimes but at others, it becomes overpowering. It feels it’s all there is and NOTHING ELSE. Now would you expect anyone to write out Nature as a summary; as a progression of set events? NO. OF COURSE NOT. And that is EXACTLY what is happening in ‘Women in Love’ – A character driven masterpiece where they spend all their time trying to figure out each other and in turn, trying to know themselves bit better. Trying to come to terms with the truth in their hearts, which, hitherto, they have denied.
We often talk about a PASSIONATE LOVE, oh sorry I TALK ABOUT IT ALL THE FUCKING TIME ;p, BUT this book portrays characters with passionate MINDS. Now THERE’S a great relief from the often stagnant, shitty love-triangles with those so-called ”SASSY” comments that contemporary novelists have made a habit of including. UGH.
ALL THE CHARACTERS (yes, all of ’em) are of such a lively and witty mind that you are drawn into their lives whether are a lover of classics or not. You see, there is a DARKNESS behind all of them – a solemnity that comes with the duality of mind, which is present in ALL OF US (no exceptions). I could quote examples here but that would just take away ALL THE SPACE and would leave you feeling cheated so I won’t.
But there is ONE THING I CAN FUCKING TELL YOU.
PLATO + JANE AUSTEN + EMILY BRONTE + NEVILLE GODDARD = D.H. LAWRENCE.
NOW CAN YOU AFFORD TO NOT READ IT??
The struggle – the emotional struggle – the tension between and among the characters is JUST TOO REAL to be ignored. I mean, you JUST CAN’T IGNORE IT EVEN if you wished to. You can’t NOT get caught up in it. You can’t NOT loose yourself in all this depth. And, at the same time, you CAN’T NOT rethink, re-evaluate your own feelings, and thoughts, and opinions on EVERYTHING. THAT’S the power of ‘Women in Love’ – it makes you think from bizarre perspectives. You find yourself beginning to become all those characters that you are reading about at once and at the same instant, you are NONE OF THEM AT ALL. You are YOU and you are THEM as well. This explains………illuminates………EXPOSES the real, the USUAL dilemma that WE ALL GO THROUGH. It’s just that sometimes we are too busy in getting caught up in all the other absurdities of life that we fail to notice our twin minds.
NOW I won’t tell you the story in brief because that would be SIMPLY CRUEL – A CRIME. I won’t give you a SYNOPSIS. I want YOU TO OPEN THE BOOK AND READ IT – EVEN IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO ENCOUNTER. EVEN IF YOU FEEL THAT CLASSICS ARE ”NOT YOUR THING” ;P
‘If you are doing a thing, do it properly, and if you’re not going to do it properly, leave it alone.’
I fucking agree with Gerald here ( A SIMPLY DELIGHTFUL CHARACTER – as are they all in DIFFERENT respects) and would also advice anyone who decides to read Women in Love to be open to wisdom, wit, and a bit of charming ridicule. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of coffee ( YEAH I HATE TEA – SUE ME!! *eye roll*) then PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE. I’m not dying JUST YET and will review MANY MORE ”YOUR KINDA” books so stay tuned but PLEASE make a thoughtful decision about reading this one. Because once you begin to read Women in Love, there’s not turning back and YOU WILL COME OUT A CHANGED HUMAN BEING – the changes may seem subtle but the WILL INFLUENCE YOUR LIFE, and I DARESAY, in a PLEASANT WAY.
