A BOOK REVIEWER’S Prayer + Promise + Warning.

YOU MUST NOT READ MY REVIEWS for I will let my heart judge the words, without any inhibitions.

When I am holding a book, my mind is no longer the master. For it is my belief that once you let too much reason in, it muddies the effect the story has on you on a much deeper level.

tumblr_okwl8fxnsc1vzaiw8o1_400

Having read a book, I will jump straight into the review with emotions hanging over my head like a sword, threatening to destroy me lest I pour them out on the paper. It pains me to not be able to talk about what I read right away so I will always be very passionate and most insistent while talking about the merits and the faults of a story.

I will not be led by anything other than what my feelings dictate.

There will not be one shred of dishonesty in what I write. Everything will be in strict accordance with the feelings invoked and the thoughts reflected upon during the course of the reading. So you can imagine that it will, sometimes, prove to be a daunting read. And I am okay with that.

When the reader is wholly invested, in a book nothing but a true account of every movement of their mind, owing to the story, will ever give them satisfaction. So that’s what I do. My reviews are much too intense and hold true to only what I thought about the book, not influenced by anyone or anything else. In that way, they will be brutal, and forgiving accordingly.

You must not be in a delusion that you will be told a detailed account of what happened with whom, who did what, and how it all ended for them. No. The only things you will find in my reviews are what moved me, what incited feelings of passionate hate or ardent love, of ignorance and indifference or that of continuous awe. That’s all I can offer you by the medium of my humble writings.

But frankly, why would you want to know anything else anyway?

tumblr_opcflueyyj1w28kico1_500

Isn’t the real reason why we read book reviews to know what the reader FELT about it? Not what happened, but their REACTIONS to the said events? THAT’S the beauty of every single review out there, isn’t it? Their singularity, their originality.

You must not read my reviews for they will be an honest account of my shattering heart and all the reasons behind it.

They will be raw, overflowing with emotions, and you might then be inclined to suppose that I am blind to the faults of the book. I am not but to think so is your choice.

You must not read my reviews because then, you will HAVE to read the book concerned with as much an open heart and suspended belief as I did, to experience, IN IT’S FULLNESS, the story those pages hold.

YOU MUST NOT READ MY REVIEWS IF YOU ARE UNWILLING TO DO THAT.
laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object
Such are my thoughts on review writing, how they should be and why a reviewer must NEVER be forced to do otherwise. Doing justice to a book, according to our opinions on it, is all we are required to do and THAT’S ALL WE WILL DO.

EVER.

  1. If you write a review, you should not take into consideration the feelings of the author, but those of the readers. Authors have reviewed and asked several times feedback from proof readers and editors before releasing a manuscript (or aught to have done so). A review has to be thoughtful and express your opinion about the strengths and weaknesses of the book you reviewed, so that potential readers can form an opinion if they should read or skip a certain book. And all reviewers have their own style and public.

    1. I AGREE! And I absolutely hate it when someone tells me that the author asked them to change their review because THEY FELT IT WASNT GOOD ENOUGH! NOBODY CARES ABOUT WHAT YOU FELT LIKE, Linda! Readers only want to hear the TRUTH from the reviewers. So that they can form an opinion and decide whether to read it or not.

SO YES, I AGREE 100% WITH YOU, Urban! ❤️❤️❤️❤️💕💕👻👻👻👻☔️ I am soo glad of your open and thoughtful comment because you have said something which I dared not include openly in the post! 🤣🤣🤣😊

      1. If you ever get a request of a writer to rewrite your review, you just retort “And what if I would ask you to rewrite your book?”
But wield your power with caution and refrain maybe of being too impulsive in your reviews.

      2. I agree! And thats such a great reminder because I usually get run away with my feelings related to a book! 😜😜

Thank you soooo much, Urban! Always great to hear your thoughts! ❤️👻

  2. I love this post, and I definitely agree about writing what you FELT as opposed to what HAPPENED in a book. I actually hate when bloggers write reviews that read like a longer summary of a book – “bonus” points if they spoil something, smh – rather than their opinion. Blurbs are, more often than not, an accurate representation of what a book is about, so while I appreciate bloggers who quickly recap the blurb, or highlight the plot points they found important, I think that’s all you should do (and maybe not even that, depending on what you want) in terms of talking about the plot.

I mean, OBVIOUSLY, I’m reading a review to see what a blogger thought or felt while reading a book, and that’s always what I’m trying to accomplish when I’m writing my own reviews. As for seeming biased, or like I’m ignoring the faults of a book – maybe they weren’t faults in my eyes, or maybe the rest overwhelmed me, and made me inclined to ignore the “faults” and not mention them in my review. Again, every review is based on ONE person’s opinion, and 99.9% of bloggers don’t get compensated for blogging, so to expect a totally unbiased critique that will magically tackle every single potential bad part in a book is impossible.

Of course someone (knowingly) ignoring problematic parts of books is a different issue.

    1. ME TOO! I mean not that there is something particularly wrong with that! Some people like to include a brief summary and I respect that but I am not a fan of this practice! 🤣🤣 And I agree, sometimes while including too much about the plot, the reader loses the sense of wonder.

TRUUEEEE!! Someone who reads a book after reading the review of their fellow bloggers and disagree with their views, thats alright! IT HAPPENS! But one must never accuse them of being dishonest because, as you said, maybe they weren’t faults in their eyes!! Maybe the good parts were soo many that they outweighed the bad ones. A review is a piece of the writer’s mind, their opinions. So yeah, it’s just common sense that one person’s 1 star maybe the other one’s 5!!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR AWESOME AND THOROUGH COMMENT, Veronika!!!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👻👻👻💕💕💕☔️

  3. *throws myself down at your feet*

    PREACH IT RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel the best reviews are the ones that are deeply personal, the ones that truly show our feelings. But I think these reviews are often times the most difficult to write. I know that for me the review writing process is different with every book. Sometimes I will focus more on prose, narrative structure. Others it will be the organic feel of the plot, its authenticity… and then there are the reviews that are pure emotion. I don’t follow one single method for writing a review. I just go wherever the book has lead me and write accordingly :))) Love this post so very much <333333333333333

    1. Hahahahah!! Please dont do THAT!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

YESSSS!! The best ones are driven purely by the intensity of the emotions felt by the reader!! 😍😍❤️❤️ IT SHOWSSSS (like most of your reviewwwwsss! 😍😘)

And yesss!! OH MY GOD I AGREE A 100% that the review is a reflection of the book – how good it was! If it was a trash fest, you wont even know what to say, no words will come up in your mind. It will be blank because there was absolutely NOTHING that stirred your feelings! Only the really great ones or THE REALLLLYYYYYY BAD ONES inspire amazing reviews! ❤️

I AM SOOOOO GLAD YOU LIKED IT, Emer!! 😍😍❤️❤️ And your comments are ALWAYS SOOO THOUGHTFUL! I LOOOVEEEE THEM! ❤️❤️😍😍👻👻👻👻💕👻☔️

      2. Hahha!! Its not terrible! 🤣🤣 I mean if a book is soo trash that I cannot stop finding faults in it then of course there is going to be LOADS to fume about! 🤣🤣❤️

  4. I’m very much the opposite, since I tend to overanalyze every little thing. But I find your reviews refreshing, like a dash of cold water in the face–because it slaps me out of my own head and into totally different frame of reference.

    1. THAT’S A VERYY GOOOD THING! That way, there is NO CHANCE of being biased because you have thought about the story thoroughly, every aspect of it! And I would LOVE to read a review written by you, Rook! ❤️❤️😍😊😊☔️

AWWW!! THATS SOO SWEET OF YOUUU!! 😭😭😭 Thank you sooo much! And I am SOO GLAD that you like my reviews!! Its…not many people do so yeah…I AM SOO THANKFUL!! 😍😍❤️❤️😊😊💕💕👻☔️

  5. Yes! Sometimes I have to wait a while to gather my thoughts especially if it’s a book I loved, in fact they seem to be the hardest reviews to write. It’s almost like I can’t release my thoughts straight away as I’m still enjoying being in that world, and once they’re out in the world I’m back in my own real world again.

    1. Oh I agree! 😍😍😍❤️ This has happened with me as well! Saying what we felt about a book, even to ourselves, has an air of finality to it. And it hurts sometimes to bid goodbye but I have also found that if I dont record my thoughts immediately, a good portion of them are lost by the time I DO decide to write the review. 🤣🤣🤣 So to tackle both of these problems, I record my reflections while reading the book and then wait a day or two to arrange them. 🤣😊😊

  6. I agree- your reviews must be completely honest! I read reviews to see the subjective view of the blogger! I want to know how the felt, what they enjoyed and why. I think if you enjoyed a book, you are not blind to the faults, they simply were not significant enough to affect the experience of the read through- I write absolutely gushing review on books I liked because it is how I felt – so I completely agree with your post! Wonderful idea for a blog post 🙂 ❤

    1. YESSSS!! I mean whats even the point if you are just going to be influenced by the author or whatnot?!

I AGREEE!! SOO WELLL SAID, Kb! If a reviewer forgets to mention a little fault that means that THEY WERE TOO INSIGNIFICANT TO MENTION!! According to THEM at least! And you cannot blame them for that, yeah?

THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR AWESOME COMMENT! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍 Your views are HIGHLY appreciated!! ALWAYS!! 😍❤️❤️😘😘

And i am sooo veryy sorry for such a late reply! FRANKLY I AM SURPRISED I DIDNT SEE THIS BEFORE?! I was just going through my post ro make sure that no comment was unanswered and felt a pang of guilt because yours, in fact, was! 😔😔😔

      1. THANK YOU – YOU’RE WELCOME!! no worries about the late reply! But definitely- no point in being influenced by the author! I always tell them my review will be honest if they ask me for a review – I even recently DNF’ed one because it was not for me at all!! Honesty is definitely the best way to write a review! 😊💖💕📚

  7. Oohh.. this is a really interesting point and I love the way you have written it!! I think reviews should absolutely show you how you feel about a book because I do enjoy writing reviews and capturing all my thoughts on a book. I think I have a mix of reviews, some that are good and some that aren’t but my favourites are definitely the ones when I have been led my emotions and thrown out all my opinions!! It is good to show your passion and sometimes it isn’t about analysing qualities but telling people what they book did to you.
This has definitely encouraged me to write reviews from the heart and like you said, it is what it going to make your reviews special!! Thank you for writing this and I agree with your thoughts!! ❤ AMAZING POST!! ❤

    1. AWWW!! 😍😍❤️❤️ I AM SOOO GLAD YOU LIKED IT, Sophiee!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️

Yess, I mean although everyone’s reviewing style is a bit different but its really worth it if there is a mix of a bit of a plot and what the book made you feel! ITS SOO INTERESTING TO SEE HOW YOU REACTED TO IT ALL! And thats what gets me excited about reading a book SO I AM ALL FOR ITT!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️

But yeah, analysing, in general, the weak and the strong points of the book is really important as well and I DEFINITELY need to work on including more of that in my reviews! 😅😅

BUT THANK YOU SOOOOOOO SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR AWESOME AND SWEEEEET COMMENT!! AHHAGDKWVSKSSKS I LOVED ITTT!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️👻👻😭😭😭😭💕💕💕☔️☔️

      1. Yes it was WONDERFUL!!! 😍😍

So true– you can include what happens so people know if they interested and then describe all the emotions. Because when people say this book broke my heart and made me feel all kind of things, I’m just like okay I need this book to break my heart as well 😂

Haha also true!! It is good to show certain factors that aren’t tainted by your opinion so they can make their own decision on whether to pick up the book. That is a really good point!! 😊

Aww.. you’re welcome!! And thank you again for this awesome post!! 💛💕💛💕💛

  8. I love this! My reviews are a rambling mess most times. I never want to give away too much of the story. I love how you write about your feelings instead. That’s awesome and is probably something I should try to do more of. I definitely rate books based on how they made me feel along with the writing, pacing, and plot.

    1. Hey, I agree with your style of writing. And I dont think they are rambling mess because in doing that, you are sharing all of your raw thoughts and emotions…and thats THE BEST ONE because then the reader gets a fair idea of what to expect. ❤️ I LOVE READING YOUR REVIEWS!!❤️❤️😘

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR LOVELY AND THOUGHTFUL COMMENT!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️ I am soo glad you liked the post! 💕☔️

  9. Great post, Rain! I definitely believe that sharing your feelings on what you read is the right thing to do. It is for others to decide if the reactions or feelings of the reviewer are similar to what they would or have felt reading said book. Anyone who thinks that being dishonest in their reviews is okay is soooo wrong! 😮 😮 😮

    1. YESSS!! EXACTLYYY! I am SOOO glad you agreee, Lashaan! ❤️😍 I mean…one must not feel like their opinions are unpopular and hold themselves back on the basis of that! Its a disservice to their readers and their own self!

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR THOUGHTFUL COMMENT, Lashaan! ❤️❤️ Always great to hear from youuu!! 👻👻👻💕💕☔️

  10. You write what you feel very well! Unfortunately this is something I still need a lot of work on. I have a tendency to break everything down and then say whether I liked it or what didn’t work about it for me, but I’m just not that great at articulating how it made me feel. Still, I agree a book review should be more than a summary of plot points-great post!

    1. I have read your reviews and they are hella informative and clearly written 😍😍😍❤️ And as for breaking everything down, it really gives the reader a thorough idea of what the book was about and what they should expect! So, believe me, yours are REALLYYYY well written and I love how very detailed they are. 😍❤️❤️ ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘 YOU ARE NOT TO CHANGE A THINGG!! 😊😊😊😊☔️☔️

As for the feelings, its just…I write my reviews this way because thats what I remember after reading the book. If its really badly written, I will destroy the fuck out of it while reviewing it (and I know its bad but I cant help it 😭😭😭) because it left me feeling empty! And who wants that?!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Nobody wants that. Nobody wants that at all.

And you are really too kind. Like I said- I wish I could put more of my feelings into my reviews like you do because that’s really what matters- how the book made you feel.

Sometimes I think I’m a little too analytical, and it hinders my enjoyment when I should just sit back and go along for the ride.

Nevertheless, your comment brightened my day- so thank you for that! 😘😘

Don’t ever stop pouring out your emotions in your reviews! Seeing the rawness of what you felt while reading a book is exactly what makes makes me want to pick up the book with the same openness, so you’re doing a fantastic job 🤗!
