[A BLOGGER’S LIFE] A RAT RACE // Surviving in a World Where EVERYONE Wants to be THE BEST//

I don’t remember the last time I felt pure joy while reading a beautifully written blog post. I sure felt enchanted BUT my heart was impaired, just a little bit. With a hint of envy.

How are they writing such gorgeous things?

Why can’t I too?

tumblr_pwa9gp8pmf1whahvko1_500

Such were the background thoughts that kept me troubled. And the sad thing is that I lost the chance of learning a thing or two from those amazing writers because I was too invested in my jealousy, that awful feeling clutching my mind in its trap – making me feel like I was doing something wrong.

The blogging world is as harsh as it is friendly. Sure you will find some awesome people here, writing beautiful things but you will also feel your heart getting corrupt as you will grudge them their talent. And then, you will try twice as hard to reach their level.

Now imagine that there are hundreds of bloggers going through this exact same process, thinking the exact same thoughts, taking the exact same steps.

EVERYONE is in the race to become perfect. Doing their best. And then some. To reach the top.

When this realization strikes your mind, you become ruthless in your efforts, not even stopping to take notice of what you are missing out of in the process.

My view, however, is a bit different now.

I like to imagine the world to be much more generous. I believe that THAT PEDESTAL AT THE TOP is wide enough for all of us to stand together and enjoy that unparalleled feeling of accomplishment.

And as far as I have seen, that’s the only way to surviveIf you start getting too competitive and forget to be kind, then you trample the dreams of others and trust me, building your own castles on the graveyard of someone else’s hopes and wishes is no way to live grandly. You will not be happy because there will always be a sneaking fear that someone might come from behind and knock you off.

tumblr_pwvj4mtwlp1so2dtao1_500

But if instead of being nasty, you lend a helping hand to your fellow bloggers and friends, provide them with resources and advise them on the things that might help THEIR blog grow as well, then it won’t just be beneficial for them but for you as well.

No man is an island.

Together is the only way forward. We grow by helping others. And the road to success is wide enough to accommodate everyone. Then why not make some friends, help them grow and enjoy the trip?

Why make becoming successful a  tedious task when it can be so much fun instead?

Don’t you adore that feeling when someone you generously helped succeeds in their endeavor? The fact that you contributed to their success makes you feel lovely, doesn’t it? So why not support all those wonderful blogs – help them instead of being envious?  It doesn’t cost you anything. And it CERTAINLY WON’T AFFECT YOUR OWN SUCCESS! It will, however, add a hundred times to your personal satisfaction. DONT YOU WANT THAT? Don’t you want to feel lovely? Generous? Kind? Good? Beautiful?

We are drowning in our dream of BEING THE BEST. The water is soo far up our heads that it has made our thinking all fuzzy. We have forgotten the very simple fact –

“THE BEST” isn’t a title that can only be awarded to one person. Hell, EVERYONE CAN BE THE BEST! And it’s when all of us are helping each other realize each other’s dreams that we become THE BEST VERSION OF OURSELVES.

Every single of us is trying our hardest to succeed, feeling exhilarated that we finally made it, but if we reach there with a rope made of twisted and broken dreams, our excitement will be short-lived because believe it or not, even at the top of the world, you need someone to share the view with you otherwise it’s just a hollow accomplishment.

You’ll soon become lonely and ultimately lose the passion that kept the flame burning because the reason behind that passion was a corrupt one – ENVY AND A DESIRE TO OVERTAKE SOMEONE ELSE’S SUCCESS. Such a hunger eventually subsides, leaving you aimless and devoid of hope.

Why condemn yourself to go through that?

  1. I am familiar with jealousy– my mum said it is because we have green eyes that we feel more jealous than everyone else (I think she made that up)😂 but I definitely get it as we are all writing and comparison just sneaks up on you when you don’t want it to.
I agree so much with what you said– you never make yourself any taller by pushing someone down and it is SO nice to encourage them and get to know them!! This is such a heart warming post and helping people is definitely the best and sharing experiences with everyone!
I think this is so important and thank you for writing it so beautifully ❤❤

Exactly so true and it is important to know that it is wrong and you don’t actually get much out of it!!

  2. It’s my believe that blogging can help you to enlarge your world, increase your skills and self knowledge. However, if you’re chasing for fame and fortune, your world will shrink to focus on these goals and instead of being interested in personal growth, you’ll try to sell a version of yourself that fits the expectations of your “customers'”.
In most cases those two approaches mutually exclude one another, although there are cases of successful bloggers who have managed to remain faithful to themselves. In those cases the success was an unintended side effect and the result of years of consistent, authentic, valuable and original blogging. They didn’t want to become “the best”, but were always sharing “the best” they could think of and continuously work to get better.

    1. EXACTLYY!! You lose sight of your own goal and you become too invested in doing whatever you can to be like the person you envy! AND THATS A RECIPE FOR FAILURE!!

Yess!! I agree…whatever they did, they still managed to remain true to their own voice and ideas! THATS WHY THEY ARE WHERE THEY ARE TODAY! And it’s soo inspiring! 😍❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for your thoughtful and insightful comment, Urban! ❤️❤️💕💕☔️

  3. I just think it’s fun to see what everyone else is doing. So many inner thoughts and worlds of creativity I wouldn’t otherwise be privy to. And everyone has their own style, so how would you compare in any case? Maybe this is because I am just old enough to have memories of the world before the Internet, and despite the noxious quagmire it has become in some areas, I still find myself having a sense of wonder about it from time to time.

I guess if you are trying to build blogging into a business this is a bigger issue, because then it’s all tied to income and a sense of professional success. It is much harder to manage envy when it concerns larger aspects of your life overall. It’s much easier to be relaxed about that kind of thing if you are just a hobbyist.

But I think in any case if you try to hard to do what someone else is doing, you lose the value you brought to the space just by being your unique self. You set yourself up for failure by trying to succeed in just the way someone else has.

    1. OH I AGREEE WITH YOU A HUNDRED PERRCENT! Every blog is an extension of the writer’s mind and it’s so interesting to see how they write, what influences them. Yes, it’s wondrous indeed because no two posts are the same – EVEN WHEN THE TOPICS ARE SIMILAR! That’s just….AMAZING!! 😍😍❤️

Yeah…for professionals who want to blog as a full time occupation, yes, there is no way around competition but I still believe that once can focus on being themselves and climb higher WHILE BEING HUMBLE AND GENEROUS. ☺️☺️😊

YESSS!! Exactly! Trying to imitate someone’s success by adopting THEIR ways is…well….you can take inspiration but one must NEVER TRY TO COPY because it invokes even stronger feelings of frustration and envy!

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR AMAZING COMMENT, Rook! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️👻👻☺️☺️☔️

  5. Omg I adore you!! Your brain is the most beautiful place. I love how you craft these beautiful blogposts and am always in awe of your gifts and talents <3333 but I totally agree with you. We should all raise each other up and everyone should just get the most out of being their own authentic true self. My blog isn't like yours and nor would I want it to be because your blog is the most beautiful and real version of you. And mine is very much me. That's what I love the most when I read everyone's blog posts. The variety. The difference. The multiple ways of viewing things. The spread of opinion. We should all celebrate our uniqueness. And embrace every facet of who we are as individuals. Isn't there a quote that goes be yourself everyone else is taken… That's the attitude to take to anything in life I feel. Be proud of who you are and be proud of everyone else for being who they are. Love this post with all my heart <3333333

Whatever we create in life is the purest projection of our minds and we should NEVER taint it by trying to be like someone else…JUST FOR THE SAKE OF MAD COMPETITION! NOPEEEE!! AND YESSS!! READING OTHER PEOPLE’s posts, seeing how they organise their thoughts and what there experiences have been IS THE BEST THING EVERRR!! 😍😍❤️❤️ And when we look at it this way, all envy goes up in smoke!! 😊😊❤️💕

  6. Great philosophy! I think everyone falls to envy sometimes, but you make a good point about just being happy with your own achievements and lending a helping hand to others. People are all different, no one is good or bad at everything and everyone also has their own niche and strengths – I say play to them and not worry about anything else! 😀

I AM SOOOO VERYYY GLAD YOU AGREE, Mogsy! Yes, everyone excels in different things – have their own talents – and it will be a disservice to your own self if you start neglecting your strengths and try to do something COMPLETELY out of your niche, it doesn’t work this way! Envy breeds self resentment and so it’s important to keep it in check! ❤️❤️❤️

THANK YOU SOOOO VERYYYYY MUCH FOR YOUR THOUGHFUL COMMENT!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️👻👻💕💕☔️

  7. I loved reading this post, Rain! There are so many beautiful and wonderful people in the book blogging community and it’s so great to see how different we are in terms of books we enjoy, style of writing and even personality. Sure there will always be people who try to bring you down or don’t support you but as a whole I find this community to be friendly and positive.

  8. Awww, you have absolutely nothing to be envious about! You write the most amazing posts and in particular you give so much yourself and have so much honesty in your writing. This means, one can sense the person behind the writing, which is not the case for all bloggers.

I write because I enjoy it and doesn’t see it as a competition. Ok, sometimes when I see a blogger with 5000+ followers, I think wow, but I don’t envy them. For me it is a fun hobby and I am so grateful to have found all these amazing bloggers to interact with. Also, I realise if I want to reach a wider audience, I probably need to spend time on blogging and maybe even use social media (oohh), but on purpose I have chosen not to, because I have other priorities.

You are so right about supporting each other. In particular, I try to support new bloggers by liking and following, because as a relatively new blogger myself, I remember what it is like starting out and having no clue about what you are doing. It has to be said that quite a high number of new bloggers disappear again after a short while.

Sorry about the long reply, but as usual you wrote a wonderful post, which inspired long answers. 😊

    1. AWWWWWWWWWWW!! THANK YIU SO SO SOOOO MUCH FOR BEING SO SWEEEET! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 YOU ARE THE BESTTTTTTTT!! 😍😍❤️❤️

I agreee aooo much with what you just said! I mean, when we approach this as a hobby – all fun and games – it’s much MUCH easier to not let ourselves fall into this pit of jealousy!

And yeah, sometimes you just don’t have enough time to maintain a presence everywhere. BELIEVE ME I KNOW! I started REALLY using Twitter last month and it’s proven quite difficult to keep up with everything. I also have an Instagram account but that I rarely use – BCAUSE THERE JUST ISNT ENOUGH TIME to read books, blog about them, tweet about them AND DO EVERY OTHER DUTY THAT LIFE DEMANS OF YOU! It’s…WE ARE NOT A SUPERHUMAN! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

YESSS!! OH MY GODDD YESSSSS!! This actually does happen! But then, it’s not the followers’ fault. The blogger also has a responsibility to post fresh and interesting content regularly. Why the fuck else will the readers stay?

OH NOO NOO NOOOOO!! HOW COULD YOU EVEN APOLOGISE FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL COMMENT?!?!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 To think that what I wrote inspired this chain of thoughts IS THRILLING FOR MEEE!! AND YOU ABSOLUTELY MADE MY DAYYYY SO THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK UOUUUUUUUU FOR THIS COMMENT! IT TOTALLY MADE MY DAYYY! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💕💕💕😘😘👻👻☔️☔️

  9. There are so many different types of blogs and bloggers out there that I think there is absolutely lots of room. I do see how jealousy can play a large part in the community, but we are all ultimately here doing the same thing. Shouting our love of books from the rooftops! You are always writing posts that make us think, and for that, I am so appreciative. ❤

  10. The feeling of envy is part of our human nature, so it’s not surprising we feel it now and then. But as long as it does not drive us, I guess it’s all right…
And as long as what we do – be it blogging or any other activity – keeps being fun, we can enjoy it much more than if we were driven by other reasons . 🙂

    1. YESSS!! EXACTLYY! There is NO WAY to avoid feeling such envious thoughts when looking at someone more successful than us BUT WE MUST NEVER MAKE IT THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND WHAT WE DO!

YEAH, “ENJOY WHAT YOU DO” although an overused and cliche advice, IS STILL THE BEST AND MOST IMPORTANT ONE OUT THERE!!

  13. Fantastic post again, Rain. I have definitely stopped following some who have been blinded by their own success that they simply didn’t care about the community or those who cared enough to follow them. I think people should just understand that we’re all under the same umbrella, one where we share a strong passion for the same thing and that it won’t hurt anyone to be supportive instead of neutral or uncaring!

    1. Yeah! In a community where every review matters, every thought is unique and valued, there is definitely no need for competition. Healthy competition, yes…because its that that drives us to better ourselves but an obsession to topple someone else from their place and take over is A SURE FIRE WAY TO FAILURE – sooner or later!

And mee tooo! When I first started out, there were definitely some who, although I admired, were too full of themselves and because of that, I ultimately stopped looking up to them!

I AM SOOOO GLAD YOU LIKED THE POSTT, Lashaan! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️ THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR AWESOME COMMENT! Means a lot! ❤️☔️👻

  14. Interesting discussion topic. I actually am not trying to be the best. I’d love to have more followers and people to interact with, but it’s not something I actively try to increase. As you said, trying to always be the best makes it a tedious chore, and that’s just not why I blog.

I do find myself a little jealous of those bloggers who always come up with amazing discussion topics and fun content ideas. I’m not that creative so it always bums me out when I feel like my stuff is too formulaic. But if I’m a little jealous it’s more out of admiration for the blogger than a desire to be better than them. I’m a little older so I think being best just hasn’t been a priority for me in a long time. But I get what you mean and if you’re aware of it you can overcome it!

    1. EXACTLY! I mean, I still believe that a bit of healthy competition is necessary to give whatever you are doing a boost in the right direction, it must NEVER reach the point of obsession because then, as you say, it sucks the fun out of it! 😕😕

I KNOW RIGHTT?! I mean, there are these awesome people who post great discussion posts every week and I am like DAMN I LOVE HOW THEIR MIND WORKs! 😍😍 And then the next moment, WHY THE FUCK CANT MY PEA SIZED BRAIN GIVE ME COOL IDEAS TOOOOOO?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yeahh, once you identify the problem, its easier to rip it out the roots because this envy thing is realllyyyyy toxic!!

I LOVVEEEEDDDD YOUR COMMENT, Sarh! Sooo thoughtful!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you soooo much for readingg!! 😍😍❤️❤️

  15. Yes!! This is such a wonderful and healthy perspective. I’m really glad that you shared it 💖It’s so easy to be competitive and compare yourself to other bloggers but really all that does is create unhealthy feelings of jealousy. Our blogs are our own and really there is enough space in the internet for all of us! We can always learn from each other, and your experience in the community becomes so much more enjoyable when you have fun with it and make friends rather than stay stuck on the numbers 🥰

  16. AH I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. Such a great post and a fresh perspective and I just love it. I find it so easy to read blog posts, to discover bloggers and to compare ourselves to others, to try to reach their level, to feel jealous, upset, mad, angry, even, at times, like so many bad and wrong and unsettling feelings all at once, when we should focus on being inspired. On being proud of the others’ work and of telling them that we are, too. On making friends, connections, sharing advice and recommendations and, well like you said, there’s a place for everyone at the top ❤ ❤
