[A READER’S LIFE] Confessions of a VERY picky, VERY moody, VERY stubborn reader.

Reading is a habit I formed very early in life. One of the very first books I read was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. That kid irked me in the beginning, to be honest. I only had the abridged version of the book and since I read it a very long time ago, I have forgotten most of what happens with him but there is ONE THING I DO REMEMBER and I REMEMBER IT VIVIDLY:

”Tom”
No answer.
”Tom.”
No answer

And then Aunt Polly just loses it!

Then The Hobbit came in my life and Bilbo Baggins showed me dreams of adventures, treasures, fierce and wise dragons. I waited for a long time for someone to whisk me away to the lonely mountain.

giphy8

I read Alice in Wonderland AFTER already having visited Neverland and making friends with Peter Pan.

Then came – trotting along like a gentlemanmy first ever copy of Pride & Prejudice. And you know what I did then? I READ IT FIVE FUCKING TIMES IN A ROW!! I started entertaining high hopes of my neighbors – new and old – and even higher standards of guys! xD THAT WAS TO BE EXPECTED OF COURSE!! 😉

My point being, books and I have been friends for a REALLY, REALLY, REAAALLLLYYYY long time and it’s only natural that I should have a few confessions to make when it comes to reading.

Some of them you will easily relate to, others you may find a bit odd but I promise you that, by the end of this post, you will leave here a much more validated reader!

laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object🖤 I don’t read books if I have already watched the movie adaption.

This happened with The Hunger Games. My brother and I watched the first movie together and we liked it soo fucking much that we went on to watch the other two the same day!

I was SOO HAPPY to have discovered such a great series but my excitement was short-lived.

Soon after, I came to know that the movie was actually based on a written trilogy with the same name. I WAS SOO FUCKING MAD AT MYSELF because this fact MUST have appeared in the credits AND I DIDN’T PAY ATTENTION!!

I was heartbroken and a part of me wanted to read the books nonetheless but I COULDN’T! I mean, what would have been the point?

giphy-9

Maybe I am wrong in this but for me, a book loses it’s charm if my mind is already filled with the screen adaption BEFORE reading it.

🖤 WHICH ONE TO REEAADDD???

I was about to start reading Notes from an Exhibition by Patrick Gale when the bell rang and there stood a kind man at my door with two parcels in his hands.

giphy-10
And excited as I was, I dreaded opening them because I knew what will happen if I did.

But being unable to control my eager heart, opened the box of my doom, took out two brand new paperbacks and…well…let’s just say that my copy of Patrick Gale’s book must have seen me drooling over them because it seemed angry at me when I picked it up again, with the new ones by my side.

What happened next shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone – I ended up reading none of them. LISTEN, I couldn’t POSSIBLY start reading the new ones without hurting the feelings of the previous one so yeah…all or nothing.

To be honest, it’s a fucking miracle I manage to read ANYTHING AT ALL because I SUCK AT CHOOSING WHICH ONES TO READ!

laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object
🖤 Too much hype scares the fuck out of me!

There is a VERY specific and VERY weird reason why I haven’t read A Court of Thorns and Roses yet.

EVERY ONE RAVES ABOUT IT SOO MUCH THAT I AM ACTUALLY AFRAID OF IT NOW!

I don’t know why this happens but once a certain book/series develops excessive hype, I sort of distance myself from it. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I feel pressurized to love it to bits and pieces, NO MATTER WHAT?

giphy-11
Yeah, could be that. Or not. But the fact remains, it takes my mind a good deal of persuading before it stops freaking the fuck out and lets me read the book in PEACE!

laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object
🖤 ”Take what you can, give nothing back!”

I borrow books from my friends all the time. All normal. BUT what you NEED to know about me is that I try my HARDEST to delay returning it to the point that they ultimately forget about it and my shelf is adorned permanently with another gem.

In my defense,

HOW MUCH DO THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR BOOKS IF THEY DON’T EVEN REMEMBER LENDING THEM, HUH??

Those books will receive FAAAR BETTER care staying with me than with such careless nincompoops!

So, again, let Jack Sparrow teach you this VERY IMPORTANT LESSON –

TOTALLY realatable, RIGHTTT??? *WINKS*

But what about YOU? What would you confess to in the holy church of Harper Collins?

I WANNA KNOW!

  1. :’) I love this. I put off books that have a lot of hype in fear i’ll hate them! I also prefer to read books before watching adaptations and end up reading nothing if I have a new book but planned to read one I already owned :’) This post did make me giggle!

IT TOTALLY DOES! 🤣🤣 I have a pile of new, unread books because once I do read them, the newness will be overrrrr 😭😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣

Thank god I am not alone with the hype phobia! 🤣🤣🤣 But sometimes I do wish that it wasn’t like that because this has been keeping me from reading a lot of great series! 😔😔 What are some famous books that you haven’t read?

I hope you enjoy the audio version, Nicki! And once you have listened to it, I would LOVE to read your thoughts on it!

  2. OHMYGOSH I LOVE THAT YOU READ PRIDE & PREJUDICE FIVE TIMES IN A ROW, YASSSSS SISTER!!!! 😍 It’s 1000% my fave book of all time but even I can’t claim to have done that! I totally get what you mean about movie adaptations ruining your impressions of books but sometimes if the movie is too good I just can’t help myself – that happened with Crazy Rich Asians & I totally ADORED the books!

Also omg the hype-scare is real – there are so many books that I delayed (or have still delayed) reading bc they’re so overhyped. I don’t have a very good history with overhyped books, unfortunately 😅

    Love your post, as always!!

    1. I TOTALLLYYY did, Ngoc! I FELL IN LOVEEEE WITH IT! Truth be told, I read it’s abridged version the first time around, complete with pictures and all! 🤣🤣 I read it AGAIN! Then mumma told me that she had the complete version as well AND I FUCKING STARTED IT THE SAME DAY! But at first I couldn’t understand the writing, obviously! So I got mum to help me. She did..and I started to get it. THEN I READ IT AGAIN! AND THEN ONE MORE TIME! 😍😍😍 And dreamy about it FOR DAYS, WEEKS, MONTHS TO COMMEEE! I did a reader insert fanfic in my head LOONNGGG BEFORE IT WAS COOL! Hahahah! 🤣🤣😎😎

I agree, sometimes the movies are do get my intrigued about the book itself but I just..I don’t know…it still feels a bit off to me, you know? 😅😅

Crazy Rich Asians? ITS THAT GOOD, huh? WELL I HAVE BEEN DEBATING WHETHER TO READ IT OR NOT but NOW I GOTTAA!!! Then we can fangirl about it together!!??? YAYYYYYYY!! 😍😍😍

AND OMG SAME ABOUT THE FILMS!!!!!!!!!!!! I just don’t care if I’ve seen the film first, it’s like what even is the point any more… I GET YOU RAIN!!! <333333333333 So I avoid film adaptations like the plague… and even when I've read the book I don't want to watch the film most of the time BECAUSE IT WON'T LOOK LIKE IT DOES IN MY HEAD OF CRAZINESS AND COLOUR!!! Like I don't know about you but when I read I don't conjure images of faces or places but I feel colour and emotion and no screen adaptation can compare to that!!!!

AND THE FEAR OF HYPE IS REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hype myself up, preorder a book I am SUPER excited to read….. DON'T READ IT EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This post is the shizz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3333333333333333333333

    1. I love comparing adaptations! It’s kind of like fanfiction, it’s just fun to see how different people imagine a same story. But I do think it’s usually more fun to read the book first so you can build the world in your head before sets and actors do it for you.

EXACTLYYY MY POINT! 🤣🤣 Like I dreaded watching the adaptation of Wuthering Heights (Tom Hardy as HEATHCLIFF 😍) FOR SOOO LONNGGG becafore finally succumbing to the temptation and in this case I just got lucky because he was EXACTLY like I had pictured him! But in most other cases, they screw with the original story and the little nuances WHICH MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE!!!!

HAHAHAHA!! SAAAMMEEE! I have The Red Queen in my shelf for 5 YEARSSS! 5 FUCKING YEARSSS AND I HAVENT READ A SINGLE WORD! 🤣🤣🤣

Also, I feel you about A Court of Roses. I haven’t read any of the books after the first one because of all the hype. Oh, and The Raven Cycle! Have you read that series?! It’s so hyped that I just can’t be bothered (or I’m too bothered??) to keep up with it 😅. ALSO, loove the gif of Jack Sparrow 😂. 7. I’m in complete agreement with you about not reading a book AFTER watching the film version. If it is a film I really want to see, then I try to get the book read first. The book is usually WAY better than the film in my personal opinion. The only two that were true to the book and extremely well done were “Mystic River” by Dennis Lehane and “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson. Oh, and my favourite version of Jane Eyre, the BBC version starring Ruth Wilson as Jane.

And hype??? I’m very choosy about whose reviews I truly believe. I follow some bloggers with very similar tastes to my own, so if they rave about a title, then I find I usually love it too. A few times I’ve been disappointed, but for the most part, the hype is merited. When it isn’t I’m honest enough to say so. One book I read this year was hyped to the max – I only gave it 3.5 stars. Because it was written by a book blogger (turned crime novelist) I guess I was expected to rate it higher? I don’t roll that way. Anyway.. the long and short of it is that although my review was mostly positive and 3.5 stars the Facebook group Killer Reads wouldn’t publish my review. I thought that sort of sucked.

    1. I AGREEEE!!! 😍❤️ And most of the times even if you watched an adaptation AFTER reading the book, and it’s badly done, it ruins the book as well somehow! Ugh! I HATE THAT!

I haven’t watched the BBC version of Jane Eyre yet! I am currently reading the book so I will watch it after that! THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR MAKING ME AWARE OF IT! 😍😍❤️❤️😘😘😘

And Mystic River? I have neither heard of this book not the movie. But it sounds really intriguing! I will have to check it out asap!

Yeah! I agree! Everyone’s taste is different and there are chances that the book you absolutely adored will be someone’s nightmare! So yeah, in that respect, book reviews CAN be tricky! But hey, that’s also how you discover new genres that you never knew you would love and books that you never would have dared pick up on your own!! 😊😊😊❤️❤️

Oh no! REALLY!? That’s soo unfair! I HATE THAT KIND OF THING! But hey, at least you stayed true to your opinions! THATS WHAT MATTERS AND I APPLAUD YOU FOR THAT! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️👻👻👻👻👻

  8. What I have an issue with is reading books I own. If I buy a new book I’ve never read before, it’ll take MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONTHS for me to get around to it because I like having books waiting for me and I’m too busy reading books “with a due date” in my mind (library books) and so many other reasons.

ANd also all of these problems are mine (tho I’ve never watched a movie adaption before the book, so IDK about that)

I am CONSTANTLY buying new books FULLY KNOWING that I NEED to read the ones I own first…but that’s something we readers can NEVER commit to! 🤣🤣🤣

I know and I don’t either except some times unlucky times when I didn’t know that there was a book too, you know! 😅😅

  9. i hardly ever read books if i have already watched the movie adaptation, too. i think the only example i remember in which i actually gave in and picked up the books was percy jackson, which i’m so glad i did, since the movie is NOTHING like the books. apart from that, if i’ve watched the movie, i’m not likely to read the book. it’s just consuming the same story twice almost and it doesn’t excite me as much.
i’m not necessarily scared by the hype, but sometimes i feel like if a book it’s too hyped, i’ll be skeptical and not want to read it because i don’t want to “look like everyone else”, lol. i know, it’s so dumb! but i feel like if everyone’s doing something, my excitement to do it drops by a mile. i’m such a “not like other girls” person, ugh.
i’m shocked about the last confession, though, hahah. not that i don’t feel like that’s okay, because truly, i’d do the same, but i feel like in the bookish community we’re so likely to complain about never getting our books back that it’s funny to see it the other way around.

    1. EXACTLYYY!! But I also believe that with classics it’s different because usually there is MUCH MORE to discover in them WITH EACH READ so it never REALLYY gets boring, you know? BUT FOR THE REST OF THEM – a BIG nope! 🤣🤣

I haven’t watched or read the Percy Jackson series but yeah, I have heard similar things about it! Must have been pretty frustrating, to watch the movie murder the shit out of the books! 😱😱

Hahahah!! 🤣🤣🤣 It’s not dumb! I can TOTALLY relate to that! 🤣🤣

    1. Hahahaha!!! Puss in Boots, A rose from Homer’s Grace, uhhhh….Jack and The Bean Stalk……yeah…those were THE FIRST stories to ever enter my mind! 🤣🤣❤️

Oh? WEL THEN! Now I can rest in peace! Because whenever someone mentions those books or I watch the movies, I just cannot stop the regret of not having read them you know! BUT YAYYYYYY!! YOU HAVE MADE ME A HAPPIER PERSON BY SAYING THAT!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️

Also with adaptations- I will read the book after if it’s something I *really* want to read, but yes the adaptation totally gives me a mental image and I HATE it if I haven’t read the book first!!!

  15. Hahaha- I can relate so hard to this post. I’m in the exact same boat with the Hunger Games, I love the movie so much I don’t want to read the book because I’m scared it will taint the movie experience. It doesnt apply to all movies though- I recently watched Pet Sematary and immediately read the book. It only happens with movies I love most or with movies where I’m not sure reading it will add much to my experience.

Unfortunately I think Hunger Games is so visual and wonderful it almost seems wrong for it to be a book.

    1. Hahahhaah!! 🤣🤣🤣 I was not sure whether I should include it or not because its DEFINITELY not a popular thing to do but yeah…I AM GUILTY OF DOING THAT! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Shamelesssly not sorry as well because LOOOOKK…wouldnt you be worried if someone borrowed a book from you and didnt return for WEEKS?! I know I would! I would pester them day and night! BUT WHEN THEY DONT, I just think…ALL THE MORE REASON TO KEEP IT! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Do I make an at least passable defence?!? 🤣🤣

  18. I have exactly the same problem with never being able to choose what to read! I used to read a few things at the same time so I wouldn’t have the empty time in between to overthink it but my meds affected my focus and now I mostly read 1-2 things and just pick up things at random, I guess…

Also! If I saw the adaptation, I will put the book on my TBR and then never look at it again. Stright up glance away when I scroll past it on GR.
The only things I read after watching were: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson books (and thank god I wasn’t left with just a memory of that awful movie), and The Spiderwick Chronicles. And technically Series of Unfortunate Events but I read like 2 books so does that really count??

My confession is — I buy physical books and then just stare at them while I’m on my kindle. In my defence — my kindle is always in my hands reach and to read a physical book I need to stand up, figure out which one to read first, and then go back to my cosy armchair??? No, thank you. My kindle has nice folders, wayy more books and is already in my hands.

    1. Your meds? 😱😕😕 I am so sorryyy for that, hon! I hope that its improving with proper care and medication yeah? ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

AND SAMEEEE!! I too just pick out books at random now! Its…wayyyy less time consuming…or at least, I am TRYING to get into that habit! 😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣

I KNOW RIGHTTT?!?!? Its just…the excitement is sucked out of the book if you have already watched its adaptation! But yeah, I have to agree on Harry Potter books! I LOVED THEM AND THE MOVIESSS SOOOO MUCHHHH!! So yeah, they are an exception! And the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as well! I LOVE THEM SOOO MUCHHHHH!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️👻👻👻👻 I havent read or watched any of the Percy Jackson series….but yes, I have heard that the movies did a very bad job?

The Spiderwick Chronicles! WHAT IS THATTT?!?! 😱😱😱😱😍😍😍 I am intriguedd!! TELL ME MOREEEEEE!!

Oh and although I havent yet watched or read Series of Unfortunate Events, I am reallyy thinking of bump it up my tbr pile because I saw this VERY GORGEOUS edition online AND I FUCKING WANT IT!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️

You doooo?!? Well, I have to agree with your reasons though! I TOTALLY GET THE COMFORT ONE GETS WHILE READING FROM THE KINDLE – easier to highlight and record your thoughts too, without the distraction of writing them down in a journal or in the phone!

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR READING THIS POST, E! And FOR LEAVING SUCH AN AMAZING COMMENTTT!! YOU MADE MY DAYYYYYY!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️👻👻👻💕💕💕💕 YAYYYYYYY!!! 😍😍❤️❤️💕💕

      1. Yeah, I’ve been in a rough spot last year but I LOVE MY MEDS AND IT LIKE I OWN MY BODY AGAIN!! ❤️❤️❤️

It’s still a work in progress but the meds made me also a bit more decisive (& impulsive…) so it’s not as hard as it could be 😀

Tbh, I’m kinda over the HP hype and I haven’t seen the movies in ages 😅 My brain moved on to obsess over different things
Yeah, I kinda blanked out the PJ movie… Books are great though!!

It’s also fantasy MG but about three siblings moving to the old family house after their parents divorced! They find out some family secrets and lots of magical creatures! The series isn’t long — you should give it a try! I loved it so much as a kid!! ❤️❤️

I want to go back to it someday but like… someday But that’s 100% valid! Buy the pretty edition!! 🙂

Yeah, I don’t remember the last time I’ve read a physical book… Sigh… Maybe one day

        No problem, love! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
