[A BLOGGER’S LIFE] Beyond Comments, Likes & Followers// HOW TO SHAKE THE POPULARITY COMPLEX//

Blogging comes with its own set of anxieties. You start a blog, you write that first post – which you think is immaculately written, by the way – you hit publish, and then NADA. You may as well be screaming into the void!

tumblr_p76kk3noru1wfdyhfo1_500

No one comments back.
No one likes your post.
No one even visits your blog.

And then you start to feel let down by your own genius – “Maybe my thoughts aren’t worth that much.”

Now, it’s only natural to want people to read your content. We crave comments not because they make us seem popular but because they validate our ideas, our thoughts and that’s something even the most talented and seemingly indifferent writers want.

But what makes them different from YOU is that although they WANT that, they don’t necessarily construct their content around that desire!!

Face it, we see a popular blog writing amazing posts and people commenting back and forth and WE WANT THAT. We all want that. AND THAT’S GOOOOOOD!!

I believe you actually should take steps to promote your blog, to make friends in the blogging community to ensure that your content is being read BUT what we fail to realize is that when this necessity becomes an obsession, that’s when the quality of our writing starts degrading. Because then we just write whatever will get us comments, whatever gets us reblogs and mentions and all sorts. Now, all that is fun and should be participated in WITHOUT IT REACHING THE POINT WHERE IT BECOMES YOUR SOLE PURPOSE BEHIND WRITING.

And I am totally speaking from personal experience.

Before starting this little beauty I wrote on a different platform, still a blog of sorts. It was my first experience of watching other people engaged in meaningful and deep conversations and I wanted that badly.
So I would do research on the most famous blogs and would write in accordance with what they were preaching, what their ideas were. I didn’t realize that they were saying what was on THEIR MINDS! It was their personal opinion. It was something that THEY felt really STRONGLY about. AND THAT’S WHAT GAVE THEIR POSTS SUCH MEANING AND POWER!

I, on the other hand, was just faking an interest in similar topics and needless to say, THE QUALITY OF MY POSTS WAS ABSOLUTE TRASH. Well, okay not TRASH, but it wasn’t something that even I myself would want to read. Because I didn’t feel THAT strongly about it. AND THE READERS MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE –

tumblr_o0gcnr0esz1uxku6jo1_r1_500

I still kept on doing it (I don’t know what THE FUCK I was even hoping for) until there came a time when I ultimately tired my mind of forcing it to write on topics that just weren’t my forte. I wasn’t well opinionated about them and naturally, that led to a decline of that blog.

I started this one, however, with a pledge that I will only write what I REALLY WANT to write about and I will not let myself be WRONGLY influenced by the popularity in the blogosphere. Don’t misunderstand me, some posts are so immaculately written that they force me to think, form opinions of my own on that topic, and ultimately generate ideas related to it. Now THAT’S healthy. But writing something just for the sake of popularity is a race that would never win you accolades and certainly not loyal and happy followers.

That’s my promise to you!

The blogging community is rich with beautiful and well-structured ideas and you will always find something to inspire you, to actually make you THINK. And that’s what good content should inevitably do. It should either entertain you, make you feel happy, or it should make you think hard and true about something, or sometimes both.

But you should NEVER sway from your preferred path and change the whole identity of your thought system just for the sake of experiencing the thrill of being someone who writes about topics that, even though are totally out of your area of expertise or opinions, gets you comments or followers.

That being said, I would still like to encourage each and every one of you to go out there and introduce yourself to all these other absolutely lovely human beings and their beautiful blogs because every writer, even someone who has a HUGE bank of knowledge and genius that would fade Mark Twain in comparison, needs readers who can make sense of what he writes. Because in the end, a post, although a piece of mind of the writer, is worth what readers make of it, and what they get out of it. Could be more than that but it’s CERTAINLY NOTHING LESS!

So, GO WRITE POSTS THAT YOU WANT TO WRITE, ON THINGS THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT! Be inspired by other people. Think hard and true and THEN go and promote what you write and it’s my promise to you that there will be many, many readers who will resonate with what you wrote.

  3. I agree! You should stick to who you are – and make blogging friends! I’ve had so much fun discovering other blogs and chatting to other bloggers, that part is almost more fun than writing the actual posts! 😀

  5. I totally get this! It can be really hard to not compare one blog to another. I think that you definitely hit the nail on the head with the idea of doing your own thing. You have such a great personality that shines through in your posts and I really enjoy reading them. 🙂

    1. Getting sucked into that comparison game is probably the hardest obstacle of them all because lack of time, energy goes away after a little while BUT A LACK OF CONFIDENCE IS A HARD THING TO SHAKE OFF! And new bloggers already being anxiety ridden, the LAST thing they want is a jealous voice nudging them CONSTANTLY that what they are writing is not going to become popular!
I am so glad you agree!! It means soo much to me that you like what I write!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANKK YOUUUU FOR BEING SOO SWEET! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️

Blogging and all social media can seem like a popularity contest and it’s too easy to get focused on the stats. It’s a great idea to just write what you want to and then readers will see you’re passionate about what you’re writing. Although I do like it when I get more views and comments, I accept that sometimes there isn’t as much interest in some of my posts… but I’m just writing what I want to and if other people like it, that’s a bonus 😀

    1. I TOTALLY AGREE!! I mean, likes and comments are A REALLY GOOD THING but our posts should not be FOR THEM! They should just be a reward for a post well-written. And I still believe that spreading some love in the blogging community never goes amiss. When I started writing, no one was reading, and I MEAN IT! But I knew that they weren’t reading it because it was bad, they JUST DIDNT KNOW THAT MY BLOG EXISTED! 🤣🤣🤣 So, my advice, get out there! Let people know who you are. Comment on posts you genuinely like. And you will make friends. BUT ONLY WRITE FOR YOURSELF! NOT FOR ANYTHING ELSE! And hey! Your posts are real good! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘

  9. “although a piece of mind of the writer, is worth what readers make of it, and what they get out of it”

AAAAAAHH!!! Actually I am working on a post about this concept, I think in a slightly different sense. You put it pretty concisely here though, and I have been meandering about making the point in my drafts.

It’s crazy how sometimes you can read several posts other people are doing, that seem unrelated, but sort of coalesce into a single idea in your own mind.

    1. Oh? I am excited now about your post! And I TOTALLY AGREE! Reading other posts, even if they are seemingly off the topic you have been wanting to write about or researching for, gives you ideas regarding your own..It’s a peculiar thing but some of the best arguments form this way!!

I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKED THIS ONE THOUGH, Rook! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️ Thank you very much for commenting! I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT POST YOU ARE WORKING ON!!!!

  10. It’s indeed a hobby. Lately a friend of mine who has more than 5,000 followers on Facebook complained that nobody ever wrote back to her or commented on her posts. To be fair, it has to be mentioned that she runs a restaurant and uses her page to post her menus and events. And writes also about her travels when she closes temporary her restaurant. But still. I see it also with people who have like 20,000 followers; always the same fifteen who return to give some feedback. The number is only important for the so called vloggers; people who earn their money by posting about their lifestyle and making promotions. 99 % is just fake. I’m even not sure about the remaining 1 %.

    1. I KNOW RIGHT?! A great number of followers doesn’t always guarantee interaction on your posts! It’s…quite frustrating, really! 🤣🤣
And YES!! The number matters only for people who wanna make money off of their blogs but for book bloggers, a great number of followers means better chances of getting approved for ARCs so..yeah..maybe we are selfish there…hahahha!🤣🤣🤣

But I totally agree with you! Blogging/writing should be a hobby first and a platform to be famous second. ❤️❤️

  11. This post was such an inspiration! It’s so easy to get obsessed with numbers of views, likes, comments. I’m going through a situation like that where I just want to increase my stats, but I don’t have time to really work on the blog. Accepting that maybe you have to slow down before it ramps up (or not), it’s hard to accept.

    1. I TOTALLY get what you are saying, Catarina! In the beginning, I too was obsessed with watching the number of followers grow..and it was fun, really..but after a while, I got to realise that it’s not the numbers I want, it’s interaction. It’s much more fun if 30 people talk with you about your posts than 300 followers who never fucking comment! 🤣🤣 It’s just..and now, I have started following only the blogs that I KNOW I will be commenting on, the ones I like…and I do this not for the sake of comments, but to make friends with them! THATS EVENTUALLY THE SWEETEST PART, isn’t it! 😍😍❤️❤️

So DONT WORRY, hon! And DONT YOU THINK ABOUT THOSE STATS ANY MORE! They WILL grow! Your blog is AWESOME! Have read your posts, SO BELIEVE ME I KNOW! 😘😘❤️❤️ Just…keep on doing what you are doing with looveee and make friends! WITH PEOPLE YOU WILL LOVE TO CARRY ON BEING FRIENDS WITH! Whose blogs you actually love…and then little by little, apart from the obvious benefit of forming great relationships in the blogging community, those stats will start spiking too! ❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😘😘

AND I AM SO SOO GLAD I WAS ABLE TO INSPIRE YOU! 😍😍❤️❤️🥰🥰

  12. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!

This was so, so, so, so, sooooooooooo good. And important. And relatable. I think almost everyone who has a platform in which they share their opinions and are part of a community in some way (by blogging, filming videos, insagram, twittter…) has gone through this phase of wanting to make your platform grow, validating your opinion and, ultimately, feel like what you say matters and is appreciated. And it’s very easy to think that numbers of followers, likes and comments are a direct representation of the worth of your content. If I have a large following that MUST mean that my content is good and my thoughts necessary, which it can totally be. But to think that not having those numbers automatically means your platform is less important is a mistake. Building numbers takes time, and you have to accept this if you want to stay true to what you really want to write and put out there. It’s just so easy to go with the flow of popularity and assume what’s trending as your own ideas and opinions JUST to get more attention, but I agree with you that, if your heart isn’t really on your content, it will show and you’ll get tired eventually of not doing what you really love.

    1. GOD YOUR COMMENT!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍 You have expressed this more thoroughly that I could EVER have done even with a part 2 of this post!! 😘😘🥰😍😍 I AGREEE WITH EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID! Building loyal followers takes a fair amount of time and it’s even more important to make friends with your audience! That way they feel appreciated! I come across so many blogs who have written such great content and people do comment but they dont seem to reply! Just like them and sometimes NOT EVEN THAT! I MEAN, what do you think is gonna happen? NO MATTER HOW GREAT YOUR IDEAS ARE if you are a snob, then your readers are going to scatter away because guess what pal, just like YOU NEED ATTENTION SO DO THEY! Make friends with them, hear out their ideas and thoughts, ITS ALL VERY VERY IMPORTANT AND SHOULDNOT BRUSHED ASIDE!

And yess, again apart from that staying true is whats going to get you appreciated, not just in the blogging community but EVERYWHERE!!

THANK YOU SOO SOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS AMAZING COMMENT, Leyre! I LOOVED IT! I looovee discussions! ESPECIALLY WITHY FAVORITE BLOGGERS! 😉😘😘

  13. I have found the exact same thing. When I get to a point where my heart’s not in my writing or the topics I’m covering, I just have to take a moment to pause and reboot. I’ve gotten that way with my bookstagram account. Sometimes I feel like I’m just chasing the next most popular book. Which is fine, but I also think I can do better. It’s possible to be current but also stay true to your own interests and preferences. Anyway, love this post! Thanks for sharing! 😄

    1. EXACTLYY! Mee too!! I just… feel soo deprived when I see everyone reading all the “it” books of the season and I have tried that. I have. But more often than not, they are not what I usually read and I find it difficult to complete them. And that takes up SOO much time! Takes practice to fight that “guilty conscience” of not reading what everybody is reading and the fear of missing out!
But yeah, it’s better to be true to yourself rather than force your mind to read/write/do something in which it takes 0% interest! 🤣🤣

Thank you soo much for your thoughtful and insightful comment, Lorilin! I LOOOVEED IT! ❤️❤️

    1. Seriously! I mean, on the one hand, the BEST ideas come from reading other content and getting inspired BUT there is a very thin line between reading it and getting envious of the attention that they seem to be getting! 🤣🤣 And it takes a bit of time and practice to get a handle on it..but its soo worth it! ❤️

And HEY I LIKE YOUR APPROACH! Haha!!no nonsense..LOVE IT! ❤️❤️🤣🤣☔️☔️

  14. This is such an important post! I think so many people get caught up in riding trends that a lot of times they lose themselves in the process. I personally resonate with blogs where the blogger’s passion is apparent and their voice is authentic.

Comments and views and likes are all important. No one wants to talk into a void! But I am a firm believer that we have to do the work to promote our content and it takes time to find our audience. And I don’t know about you, but I thrive genuine conversations and connections! The best part of book blogging and the community in general is that it is so open and welcoming; I’ve made so many friends!

    1. SERIOUSLY! Losing your sense of purpose and considering trading your honest voice for a few more followers and comments is just…is the beginning of your decline! I have experienced that first hand and I hope people, those who get caught in this, take a lesson from that!

MEE TOOO! FRIENDS ARE THE BEST PART OF BOOK BLOGGING! When I started, I didn’t know I will be meeting such BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE AND MAKING AMAZING FRIENDS!! 😍😍😍❤️❤️ It’s the conversations, the discussions THAT MATTERS!making friends is more important because then, you have something genuine to talk about! 😍😍❤️❤️

      1. FRIENDS ARE THE BEST OKAY! I don’t always leave comments when I read a post because I prefer to do so only when I have something genuine to say & talk about, but it is so much fun to sometimes troll my friends’ comments just because I love them muahahaha

  15. This is such a well written post. Your personality really showed (and does in all the posts of yours I’ve read). I love the blogging community and interacting, even when it feels like a full time job. I wish I could comment on a lot more posts than I do, but I’ve been trying harder. My old person fingers hurt though. So I might read way more one day than a really bad hand day. I love how much you stress to be yourself and blog about what you want. I think a lot of bloggers forget that. Or new bloggers (which was me a couple years ago) just aren’t sure what their voice is yet.

    1. I agree…sometimes keeping up with it all gets pretty overwhelming but the joy of meaningful interactions and friends overpowers that! 😍😍

EXACTLY! And I think it’s the new bloggers that need more of our support, you know..because we have all been there and know directionless we feel sometimes when nobody seems to be reading and the doubts start to creep in

THANK YOU SO SOOOO MUCH FOR READING!! 😍😍❤️❤️❤️

  16. Absolutely wonderful post, Rain. Thank you for sharing it with us and for giving us the opportunity to understand through you how important it is to be genuine with ourselves. It’s nice to see how much you believe in this now, through experience. I too believe that writing and sharing what’s your mind and putting effort into answering others and talking with others is the right way to do things if you’re looking for meaningful interactions through this platform. It’s why I don’t mind that not everyone is interested in some of my reviews (e.g. comics) because I know that it’s not something everyone reads but I’ll always be grateful to those who take the time to do so. After all, we’re not here to bash each other but to embrace the joy of everyone and help each other love what we do even more! 😀

That blog died such a lonesome death that I…well…my eyes were opened! 🤣🤣🤣 I knew I wanted to share the things that I LOVE but no one else seemed to be talking about them and well, I felt discouraged and afraid that people might not like it. And it’s ESPECIALLY true of almost all the new bloggers and that’s why they need ALL the support we can give them! But yeah, even the ones that seem pretty well-established go through this dilemma from time to time and I just wanted to remind every one that we are there to read their genuine content, thy just have to be unafraid to put it out there! 😊❤️❤️

And hey, although I am not that much a comic lover myself, but it’s fun to read your reviews of them! ❤️❤️ They are ALWAYS IMMACULATELY WORDED! 😍😍❤️

I have long since given up trying to be more bubbly and interesting like bloggers I look up to but every now and then I still get the urge to try harder and be more like them so more people will interact with me I’ll also have close blogger friends. I stick to what makes me happy but it’s an ongoing struggle and *sigh* its tiring.
