[A READER’S LIFE] 5 TOTALLY Weird Things I do as a Reader, Lover, Dragon of BOOKS

(WARNING – It might get a bit dramatic around here. But hey, that’s just how I roll. πŸ˜‰ )

Books are paperbound dreams that lift you up, up and above everything you know and everything you like to escape from. Soo pretty, soo beautiful – you just want to admire them and hold them near and never let them go. But they are also the cause of many of those weird quirks that we unintentionally and inevitably form.

And I am here to share them with you.

WHY, you ask?

Well, I don’t know about you guys but it’d do me good to know that I am not the only one who does these crazy-ass things.

❀ TOUCH-THEM-NOT

I don’t like people going through my shelves. PERIOD

Yes, they can admire those immaculately put, beautifully arranged mighty ones BUT THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THEM, TAKE THEM OUT AND START FIDGETING!!! I know, I know, it’s super extreme and hey, I wasn’t like that always, okay?

But something happened once upon a time –

Mumma was showing some distant cousins my books (YEAH THEY WANTED TO SEE THEM BECAUSE ..OBVIOUSLY! *PFFTTTTT*) when one of them wanted to see ”that big, blue one” (and here we are talking about LADY MIDNIGHT by CASSANDRA CLAIRE) She took it out. The little guy held it for a few nanoseconds, got bored, left it lying on my bed and went out. And as she was putting the book back, she totally messed up the corners doing the task in a hurried, haphazard way.

MY. OWN. MOTHER!!

THE BETRAYAL!

giphy-7

I was NEVER THE SAME AGAIN!!

❀ PROTECT AND ATTACK

When I was little, me and my little brother used to sleep in the same room. Our study was in the room adjacent and all my books were there.

One day I heard of a break-in in one of our neighbor’s house,
I WAS SOO FREAKED OUT and NEEDLESS TO SAY that from that day on I slept with ALL of my books tucked around my bed because I was afraid that some vicious fuck llama might steal my babies!!!!

giphy-8

And this is something I still do, by the way.Β  I NEVER leave my books in the bag whenever I go to stay at my relatives’. I take them out at night, keep them by my bed and the next day, I do it all over again.

SUPER WEIRD, I KNOW!

laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object

❀ TO-READ or NOT-TO-READ

Now, this is the reason behind many of my reading slumps. I get soo sulky after reading a beautiful story that I JUST DON’T WANNA START A NEW BOOK because then all the memories of the one I just finished will be GOONEEE!!!

I feel as if I will lose a part of me. And that’s one of the biggest reasons why I don’t start a new book FOR A REALLY REALLY LONG TIME.

This happened when I first finished reading Harry Potter. I WAS SOO IN LOVEEE WITH EVERYTHING ABOUT THOSE BOOKS THAT I RE-READ THAT SERIES COUNTLESS TIMES before moving on to The Hobbit. and then, what do you know? THE PATTERN REPEATED ITSELF! I was a glutton for them and –

giphy-9

The most recent example of this though is when I read The Snow Child. That book destroyed mee!!

❀ FEAR AND LOATHING INSIDE THE T.V. SCREEN

I am sure you guys can DEFINITELY relate with this one.

I am afraid of watching book adaptations. THE FEAR OF DISAPPOINTMENT IS JUST TOO GREAT. Sure, there are some really good ones out there but whenever I find out that the book I read has been or is going to be made into a movie/series, I get so fucking nervous because a part of me believes that it’s just not going to be good enough.

Case in point, Good Omens. The adaptation came out months ago on Amazon Prime but I kept putting it off till now because I DIDN’T WANT O REPLACE MY PERSONAL IMAGE OF ALL THOSE CHARACTERS AND AMAZING SCENES.

But it was FAAAR from being a disappointment, I am telling you! I ABSOLUTELY ADORED THE SERIES!!! ❀

❀ SHARING IS NOT AN OPTION

Whenever I come across an amazing, heart-wrenching book I don’t want to tell anyone about it. At least not in the beginning.

You see I feel like telling people about it will somehow take the magic away and...then it won’t be as special anymore.

This happened to me recently when I was reading The Night Circus. My friend asked me if I recommended it and I FLAT OUT SAID –

giphy-10

I know that was a horrendous thing to do but I WAS JUST NOT READY TO SHARE MY LOVE WITH HER.

laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object

❀ OH MY LIBRARY, HOW I LOVE THEE!

Whenever I visit my local library, I AM FILLED WITH ENVY BY ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE THERE. Like what are you all doing here, you abominable little shits??

THIS LIBRARY IS MINE!
THESE BOOKS ARE MINE!
AND MINE ALONE!

giphy-11

SO GET YOUR FILTHY LITTLE HANDS OFF THEM YOU ABOMINABLE TWATS!!!Β

I mean I could be browsing in a completely different section but if I see someone else in the next one, picking out gorgeous hardbacks and stroking them, I GET SICK TO MY STOMACH! It’s like hey, my future boyfriend might be in there and you are probing him!

laurels+flowers_0007_Vector Smart Object

WHAT ABOUT YOU, HUH? Which of these habits are you guilty of? Can you add to my list of weird little quirks that readers have? WHICH ONE DID YOU FIND THE WEIRDEST? Let me know.

  1. ooooooooooh this is me ahhh. I let one of my friends borrow one of my books a few years back and when I got it back, there was a huge FOOTPRINT on the title page. Luckily it wasn’t one of my cleanest/neatest books, but STILL. And there’s people at your library? ahahaha I never see people in the YA section but when I do, they always pick the most disgusting and boring looking books. I don’t understand people. AND THE CORNERS WERE RUINED? ooooooh. No. I accidentally do this to my books sometimes (my hunger games is all scratched because I tried to fit too many books on my shelf- ugh.) I’M SOrRY.

    1. OH NO!!!!! A FUCKING FOOTPRINT!! DAMN BECK!! I would have KILLED anyone who did that!! (you didn’t though, did you? *gasps*) Well, yeah..there are…and to be honest, most of them are just my friends whom I enjoy spending time with but IN THE LIBRARY I BECOME A WHOLE DIFFERENT PERSON! Plus there is this Spanish library at my institute and its soo beautiful and all the books are soo beautiful I WANNA CRYY AND NOT LET ANYONE NEAR THEM!!1 😦 😦
Yeahh…and what’s moreis that she didn’t seem to understand THE GRAVITY OF THAT SITUATION!! GODD!! Scratched books feel like…I don’t know….it feels ;like a bit of the magic has been peeled off of the cover, doesn’t it? I don’t know…it just feels off.
Fitting too many books in too little space, of honey, we have all been there! xD ❀

      1. I don’t know… did I kill someone? (nah it wasn’t a book I particularly loved- it was just a book I had for school BUT if it had been, lets say, a nice hardback, yeah, she’d be dead rn)

IK IN THE LIBRARY I FEEL SO COMFORTABLE! MORE THAN I DO IN ANY OTHER PUBLIC SITUATION. (oooh wait you have a spanish section? Our other language books/ instructional language books are in one tiny shelf and it is so pitiful :()

LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH YOU *gooood gooood* ahahah but you can threaten to make her pay for the next ruined book if that wouldn’t be disrespectful or anything. (but if you paid for it…….)

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Believe me if it was a beautiful hardback, I’d have done the killing of you weren’t feeling up to it! ❀️🀣🀣

Well, not in that one…I am learning Spanish so at Instituto Cervantes, there is an AMAZING library in different dialects, full of amazing poetry, AND EVERY SINGLE BOOK OF Gabriel Marquez!! IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE OF COURSE BUT OH THOSE EDITIONSSS!’ 😍😍😍 This one time I spent 6 hours there..going from section to section and when I went to the librarian with 6 fat ass books in my hand, she looked at me like I was retarded or something (the limit being 4…🀣🀣) I had to BEG HER to let me take them because we had a break from the next week so…..my Spanish still isn’t THAT perfect but the motivation to read THOSE BOOKS is definitely a great inspiration! 😍

You know what, I think I AM gonna do it the next time she or anyone does even a single harm to any of my babies. A single scratch and you pay for the next book I buy or something like that..🀣🀣

      3. I would totally hire you but it was years ago and the thirst for revenge is gone. It was a philosophyish book so I didn’t care as much, but I was still upset aha.

And A FOUR BOOK LIMIT? at least make it FIVE so it can be a satisfying odd number! I can only imagine how amazing those editions would be.

Just post a warning sign on your shelf: WARNING: IF I FIND SO MUCH AS A FINGERPRINT YOU WILL BE FINED A SUM OF THE BOOK’S PRICE+ FIVE DOLLARS FOR MY TROUBLE.

And if you enforce the rule, it should work? Make the sign pretty but readable

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Well, ofCOURSE you’re ere upset, babe! A book is a book is a book. No justifications are acceptable! 🀣

Yeah, it’s a four book limit (which I too think is a real crappy number to stop at) but it’s because they also lend audiobooks and movies and all sorts so yeah..they try to make it…well…manageable, I guess? Don’t know…

Oooohhh! I am gonna do that now! Pretty but threatening..OOOHHHH! I AM SO GONNA DO THAT! 🀣

    1. SERIOUSLY! And even though sometimes it seems like the adaptation might actually be good, I just don’t feel like taking chances and ruining the whole experience with the book, you know!

    1. Well, it sounds like a fucking nightmare then! 🀣🀣 But in mine, it always seems like a fest or something because…just too many people and I feel jealous for all the books that THEY are taking home and I am not! Haha…but hey…it’s fine…🀣

  2. This is such a fun post, thanks for sharing your bookish habits. πŸ˜‰ I recognise not wanting to start a new book, when I’ve finished one I really love. It is nice to ponder about it for a couple of days and enjoy the memories before starting a new one.

Glad you enjoyed the Good Omens show. I haven’t watched it either. Like you, I loved the book and can’t see how the show can live up to it. But perhaps I should give it a chance.

    1. EXACTLY! I too wanna simmer in all those experiences I shared with the characters for at least a few days (sometimes weeks) before moving on.

I was TOTALLY in denial about the same…that there is no way that all of that wit and sarcasm and genius can be crammed into a tv show but…to be honest, THEY HAVE! And it’s real good. (Still not as good as the book, nothing can be but worth watching, in my opinion.) 😊😊❀️

  3. Wow, you truly are protective of your books! I can relate to not wanting people to touch my shelves – mostly because they always put things back in the wrong place and mess up my organization πŸ™„ And I’m totally the same way about adaptations of the books I love. I’m so glad you liked Good Omens, though – I loved it too! ❀

    1. RIGHTT!?!? I mean HOW HARD IS IT TO FUCKING PUT THEM FROM WHERE THEY TOOK THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE!?? SOOO SOO ANNOYING!

Well, you know you should also give the tv series a try. I was in doubts, as I mentioned, about whether the producers would be able to catch that…sarcastic, funny and witty spirit of Gaiman and Pratchett’s writing but they seem to have done EXACTLY that and so much more! I totally recommend it! Le me know when/if you watch it..I would love to know your thoughts on it.

THIS is the first time I come across a list of things readers do that actually feels unique and personal to the creator, you in this case hehe. I loved it!
AAAAAAAAAND I have to admit that I agree with the fear of watching movie adaptations, and people touching my bookshelves. Not so much my mom, but whenever I have people over and they start flipping through my books and reading my annotations or asking me why I have post-its all over my favorite books I SEE RED

Right!?? Trying to come to a decision about whether or not to watch adaptations gives me nightmares HAHHAAH!!! 🀣🀣🀣

There’s this classic Filipino book called Noli Me TΓ‘ngere, which translates to β€œtouch me not”, and I think it’s perfect place would be on your bookshelf πŸ˜‚. And OH MY GOSH you have taken bookworm to a whole new meaning by cocooning yourself in books at night HAHAHA. (do you… ever read bedtime stories to your books?)

Ughhhh, another reason to read Good Omens. Do you watch Doctor Who? Because I didn’t know that David Tenant was in Good Omens until recently, so now I NEED to watch it for him.

Also, I completely relate to the crowded library thing πŸ™†πŸ»β€β™€οΈ. I’m always so surprised that there’s people? at the library?? like I thought people don’t read anymore, so why are they all here??

      1. Oh yeah, the author is some Filipino hero who knew a bunch of languagesβ€”including the language of the /then/ colonizers πŸ˜‚. That’s so cool that you’re learning Spanish though! I’ve actually never read the book, but it must be good if it’s a classic!

Sherlock and Supernatural!! The Superwholock memes were how I got into those two shows after starting Doctor Who! That era makes me so nostalgic 😒. But… I also can’t remember a lot of it?? I was watching too much TV πŸ˜…. My favorite episode of Supernatural was the Groundhog Day one where Dean kept dying over and over πŸ˜‚. You should definitely watch Doctor Who though! I’ve never read the books, but ~ I think ~ they’re basically transcriptions of the TV episodes, so you’re better off just watching the series. And start with the Christopher Eccleston doctor! I’ll keep pestering you to watch Doctor Who until I read Good Omens πŸ˜‚πŸ’πŸ»β€β™€οΈ.

I think part of me accepts the fact that it’s never going to be 100% accurate, but I’m always really interested to see how they make it unique. and YES!! I definitely have gotten into reading slumps, because a book was just SO GOOD that nothing else was capturing my interest afterwards. I’m actually really fine with people touching my books, and even borrowing them… as long as it’s clear to them that I’ll murder them if they hurt my babies 🀣. I’ve had some bad experiences with letting the wrong people borrow my books, so I’m careful – but friends I’ve known for a while are generally fine. πŸ™‚ Great post! πŸ™‚

It almost feels like a fucking breakup! 😭😭😭

Hey, BORDOWING IS A BIG NO NO FOR ME! Even my friends… A BIG NOPE!! I forgot to add it here but once I gave one of my PRIZED addition of fairy tales to my cousin sister and she took out some of the 3D illustrations…literally tore them away…..okay yeah she couldn’t have been more than 8 years old but THAT’S NO EXCUSE! 😑😑 Since then, I HAVE STOPPPED GIVING BOOKS TO ANYONE!

Well, at least you have made it clear the peril they will be in if they try anything UNTOWARD with your babies AND THATS IMPORTANT! To quote Dowager Countess @ Downton Abbey, β€œSometimes it’s good to rule by fear” 😎😎🀣🀣

I don’t get jealous of people in the library as a whole but I do get annoyed when I go into the YA section and they have people who have been expelled from school being taught there. I am awfully glad I did though because WOWW!! The movies captured every little intricacy of the books beautifully! 😍😍❀️❀️ So I reckon there are downsides of this gripping fear too…because I think that maybe I am missing out on a lot of good movies, you know…God it’s frustrating to be a reader! 🀣🀣
Wow, must be super annoying!! A version of the same happens with me when people sit in the library with their laptops opened and their chargers everywhere…like…covering the whole fucking desk! 4. Its only quieter if you go there before afternoon because after that all kinds of stupid people start showing their faces, hahahah! 🀣🀣🀣🀣 I enjoy some, I loathe some…🀣

  12. Hahahaha I totally learned a lot about you through this post! It’s funny that you forbid people touching your library, I actually like when people play around with my books and show interest in them since I find myself with very little friends who love books as much as I do and when they are intrigued, I’m quite happy hahahh I do agree that show/movie adaptations are tricky and they often end up disappointing, although it’s not always the case, and a lot of them just give us a new take on the source material. πŸ˜€

    1. Well, now that you say it, yes, it’s actually nice when people do take an interest in the same things as I do BUT YOU KNOW HOW SOME OF THOSE IGNORANT SHITS AREE! First, they treat my books casually + they think it’s acceptable to borrow them and then NOT return them on time + THE FACT THAT WHEN THEY DO RETURN the pages are spoiled and the spine is broken!! THE HORROR! This happened to me a couple of times…and then I JUST GOT….WELL NOW I HATE THEM ALL! 😑😑

Yep, adaptations are the trickiest and I HATE IT when they don’t do justice to the books and sway from the plot….now THAT hurts! But yes, I agree with the fact that some of them are quite cleverly and beautifully directed…and it’s a treat to watch them! ❀️❀️❀️
But you know what, thinking about them the way you do, Lashaan – being open to different ways the plot can be moulded and managed artfully – I think I am going to go easier on the adaptations while judging them from now on. πŸ˜‰πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜Šβ€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ

  13. HAHAHA omg this post is my fave thing EVERRRRR!!! Also I can’t believe your own mum did that?!? I don’t think anyone has dared touch my books unless I’ve invited them to & when I lend books to my sister she brings them to school bubble wrapped bc she knows how much trouble she’ll be in if she ruins them πŸ˜‚

I totally understand the book adaptation thing as well – there have been so many times I read a book before checking out the adaptation then got cold feet after finishing the book & bailed on the adaptation πŸ˜‚

    1. I KNOW RIGHT!?!! The sense of betrayal was SOO STRONG with that incident I AM TELLING YOUU!! 😑😑

Damn right!! SOMETIMES ITS GOOD TO RULE BY FEAR!! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜

EXACTLY! There are soo many bad ones out there that I am not apprehensive whenever someone suggests me an adaptation. Some of them are REALLLYY good too so guess I have been missing out on a lot of really great movies and THIS MAKES ME SAD!! 😭😭😭

I AM SOOO GLAD YOU LIKED THE POST!!! 😍😍❀️❀️ Your comment made my day!!
